A virtual pet (aka digital pet or artificial pet) is a artificial human companion, a simulation of a pet, animal or creature that "grows" when you click on it. The virtual pet's "growth" is simulated by replacing one image with another image. For example, the first image could depict an egg, whereas the second image depicts a penguin hatching out of an egg.
